Cool NOS find.

The cursed Super C died on Dad while moving a wood trailer about a month ago. He pushed it in the shed and that's where it sat.

Yesterday we took a look at it. No spark. Points weren't opening. The Tractor Supply points we put in it last spring, the last time it mysteriously died, BROKE. The little fiber piece snapped off.

We're looking for the old points in the shop, when Dad finds a mangled old blister pack in the bolt bin... It's a brand new set of GENUINE IH points in the original package! They haven't seen the light of day since 1977.

Since the package was mangled, we used 'em. The tractor runs like a top now.

In 1971-72 era Ford Motor Company had a supplier of points (OEM) that had the plastic rubbing block snap off, stranding new or near new cars. I remember replacing at least 30 sets, some as towins some as preventive medicine. Jim

Very cool find. Those points will last a long time if everything else on the tractor is up to snuff. Back then they made points out of pretty good quality material. Most of the point you get now days are junk. I'll bet you won't be replacing those for a very long time.

I rescued one near here. After I pulled 4 wires to get the cap off I found the trouble. I guess they didn't trust me when I said I had to go home for a set of points. They had a guy go with me to make sure I came back.

(quoted from post at 08:28:03 01/19/15) Hopefully you put a tiny dab of high temperature grease on the fiber block.

Oh yes, the package included a little plastic capsule of grease that we used to keep everything "period correct."

Can you get "better" points anywhere? My bet is that no matter who you buy from, they're all made in the same factory in China.

Replaced mine with a set from TSC a couple years ago and it still runs. Of course my 240U only gets used a few hours a year so maybe I'm lucky. I used some graphite based grease on the fiber pad when I installed the points... maybe that helps.

The last NAPA contacts I bought for an IH distributor were made in Mexico. They seem to me to be pretty good parts.

Dad bought tune-up parts not too long ago at the local Rural King for his H. Inside of 5 hours the contact piece on the short arm came loose. Garbage.

I wonder that too, if any quality replacements are being made.

Going to a transistor ignition will make those points last "forever".

I had the same problem with the points from Rural King. I got a set from NAPA and they are still in the dist. and that's been almost 2 years ago. So, I only buy ignition parts from NAPA. That's my 2 cents worth...........Kenny

had the same problems, no mater whats on the box, if its got junk in it, it wont last, ive been lucky and found a few sets of original blue streek nos points on ebay, 2 years later there still fine, tractor is in dailey use, if the base is not copper colored its not the good stuff

hay im having the same problem with my sc got the points at tsc in oct did not last till the engine got warm

we had a pressure digger with a uc-301 power unit that ran good until the shop tuned it up for the next job ,it started good and would rev up o.k. but would start skipping when loaded, field mechanic checked it out and came back with a set of Echlin points and condenser, installed them end of problems, I asked what made him suspect the points he said when I saw how I was doing and found it had blue streak points I realized it was doing the same thing as the new model Pontiac at that time had done with a mechanic at the dealer he had work for, about a day of no results until he replace the points again with another brand it left the shop squealing the tires

I think a lot of ignition parts for old tractors
come from the same factory reguardless of the name
on the box.

I have bought distributor caps for IH mags from
TSC, Carquest, Adam Hersfields, A&I, and NAPA. I
can not see any difference. In fact they have the
same markings in the same places.
