56 vs 86 series

I have a Farmall 656. What is different between it and a international 686? What are the changes - improvements? I know IH went for 56 to 66 to 86. Is one better than the other? Views please?

Pretty much the same tractors with some incremental improvements made during the production runs. The biggest difference in in which engine was used. There were some changes made to the shift linkage in the 656 tractor. Later tractors came with the improved shifting. There were also changes made to the lighting and dash.

Major engine difference from a 282 glow-plug diesel to a 312. Gas was 263 vs 291. 686 had a bit longer frame and the diesel was about 1000lb heavier with Rg and canopy.

It will crank easier than the 282 . I like the older ones even if I have to pull them to start . Yes I am crazy.

Actually, some 686's had the (made in IH's German engine plant) 310; some 686s had the 312. Both are great.

Melrose Park, Illinois. At least that is where they were assembled. Parts also came from other factory. Five engines in that series were built. The 312 and 360 shared a smaller block and head than the larger 414, 436, and 466.
