zenith carb, Gas or kerosene

Hi I have a 49 super a. I am trying to figure out if the carb is set up for gas or kerosene. its a 10514A carb. I believe its a Gas only tractor but the carb has a adjusting screw on the main jet. its a screw head not a t handle. the needle is cut or broken off of the screw though. Just trying to figure out if i need to get a new adjusting needle or if it is set up ok to run on gasoline as is. I don't see any numbers on the main jet. any help would be appreciated

I believe your "screw head" is a t-handle that is broken off. A close inspection should reveal a jagged face. I don't have a listing for your carb number. If the right listing was found, it would answer your question. The condition your adjusting screw is in, all it is doing is plugging the hole. Someone may have put it in just for that purpose. The first Super As (before yours) used the same carbs as the A. They used an 18 (about 0.0354 inch) main jet for gas and a 19 (about 0.0374 inch) for distillate (not much difference). Yours may vary a little, but can't by much. How is it running (if it is running)? If it runs fine, I wouldn't worry about it. If it seems rich or blows black smoke under load, I'd try to measure the jet and go one size smaller.

(I've been told those jet # to inch translations, but no proof. Use at your own risk.)

The side that is supposed to be a needle looks like it broke off and got taken to a grinder. I dont have anything to measure the jet that i can think of. The tractor was running good it did have a little haze of black smoke under a load though. had it out cultivating the garlic crop the other day and the carb started over flowing and the clutch pilot bearing started to seize. I parked it in the shop and am trying to fix all the kinks. I have an acre of garlic growing and need this tractor for cultivating before the weeds grab high gear and get out of control. thanks for the advice

Based on the black smoke, and absent of any other information, my guess is that you have a distillate carburetor and you are running rich because of the damaged adjusting needle. I think I would buy a new needle and try to adjust it in enough to lean it out a bit from where it is now running. You can get a replacement needle (on this site for one place) for a reasonable cost.

Maybe someone with more information will be able to add something to make a better suggestion.
