International 340 tractor noise in rear/tranny

I have a neightbor who has a International 340 tractor. I am not certain of the year. I didn't know until yesterday that he has had a leak around the rear wheel bearings for a long time. He said it stopped leaking a couple weeks ago, and he was all excited that it "fixed" itself. Of course I had to burst his bubble by telling him it stopped because there was no fulid left. He told me about it now because when you move forward or backward, you can hear a clinking noise, and vibration from the rearend/transmission. He did put 8 gallons of fluid in it and it still is making the noises. Now, I get the task of trying to find the problem, and fixing it for him.

Any suggestions? After removing the seat and the top of the unit, as well as drain it. What do you think I should be looking for other than an obvious piece laying in the bottom? I would appreciate any and all help I can get from you all.

Respectfully,
Dennis

Depending how long he ran it with no oil I would expect scored
bearings at least. There are a lot of bearings in a transmission and
they are usually not the easiest things to get at to change.

Is it true that the rear had to be split to do anything with it?

I don't have 340 specific knowledge. If the transmission has a top
"deck" that you can remove that will give some access. If you have
to replace all of the bearings you will probably have to split it too,
and pull the axles. I have been part way down that road with an H
and a 300 and it was a bit of work but with the help of some wiser
folks on this forum I was able to get the work done alone.

Yep just to reiterate what Zach said if you end up having to replace bearings, shifting gears, etc, on the main and counter shafts. you will have to split it to pull the main-shaft out in order to get the counter shaft out.

Thank you very much. Now, does anyone have pages of a manual they can copy and send to me? Also. Do you think the first thing I should do is remove the seat and odds and ends to take off the top plate to look and see what I find first?
