Farmall F12/F14 Replacement Rim Options

Greetings all. I have just purchased my first antique tractor. Its a Farmall F14 in average condition. The PO was able to air up one tire to load it (its tubed) but the other rim, the ring wasn't good enough. This has the cutoff spokes and split rim style which I could probably make work, but I think I'd like to go modern.

I kind of knew this getting into it but I'm not seeing a whole lot of discussion of this topic or options in the market place. I also have access to the 40" cast centers, but that would need new rims as well.

So, what are my options? There are 2 phases to this. (1) - get it mobile [read cheap] and (2) get it looking nice and safe to handle [read I'll spend some money].

Buy a 38" rim, weld on new cutoffs to fit? But now I'm using 38" tires on a 36" tire tractor.
I know the Super C is a 36" but I'm not seeing any that would be a direct replacement.
I'm not really seeing anything for the 40" cast centers. I can buy tires but rims don't seem to be available.

I can't be the first with this problem? I'd like to discuss what options are for myself and any others to follow.

I should have a set of 38 rims on cut offs, or a
set of 36 on factory spokes. I am in MN let me
know if this helps.

I believe Farmall H cast centers would fit on your F14. Just a thought.

I also have a 36" cutoff rim for sale. I don't know where you are located so shipping may be an issue though. Rim is in good shape, but I only have one. (I've had it on eBay for quite some time now)

my email is [email protected] if you're interested in the cutoff I have

I would be interested in seeing these. There is/was a set on Ebay but I was trying to pair them with some used 36" tires to help manage the costs. These rims don't need the clip right?

That's an interesting idea. If I stuck with the 36" cut offs, I'd probably stick with what I have and try to have my weld shop weld them onto a new 38" rim. I'd prefer spokes to go with my front spoke wheels and I'm trying to avoid throwing money at rims that aren't my final destination. But, I haven't decided what my final destination is yet.

I have two sets of round spoke wheels for the F-12/F-14,one set is 40 inch the other is 36. Would sell either set or both. 250.00 per set. I am in southeast Iowa. 319-931-2754

Youd be money ahead to forget the 40s. The tirs alone cost me over 1100, not to mention the rims on mine were iffy, so out came the welder. You can get 40" blank rim, or could, and mount them to the start centers similar to the Cs, but again, money is a factor and why I didn't do that.

StrikeForce,I collect these tractors and I love the looks of the cast center wheels,I always thought about finding a rim that would fit over the cast centers and cut and weld tabs to the rim, bolting them to the wheel. The tabs would have to be on both side of the wheel for stability.I know that's not oringial but no one would even know

I agree with you Jimmy. From looking at pictures, the cast wheels when done right look nice. My original plan is to get the cast rims and store them in the garage until I have more money than I know what to do with (aka....a long time from now) Lol!

Would it be safe to say that 38" drop center rims have the same inner diameter to weld the current cutoff rims I have onto? I don't have one to measure but from what I've seen in pictures, the drop center rims have a inner dip that would make the inner diameter the same or smaller than what I currently have. This is my current "short term" solution.

Scrap the cut offs & shop for original wheels & rims. Either way, show or work, you have what it was designed for.

Just so I understand this correctly, these style rims were NEVER used for rubber from the factory? These all were cut off and welded? Thus why I am seeing so many different versions of them when I'm looking around?

"Cutoffs", by definition, were steel wheels from the factory. They were field converted to rubber tires by torching off the original steel tire and welding a pneumatic tire rim in its place. There were specialized tools and standard instructions, mostly from the tire companies, to do the conversion.

Typically on most IH tractors, if you find rims and flat spokes, they are cutoffs.

Thanks Jim. I guess its interesting to see how they handled enhancements to equipment over its 75 year lifetime. Another reason I'm enjoying owning this and my 1923 hit miss engine. My little pieces of history. :)

I believe I have started in a good direction. I found a set of cut-off wheels on 38" rims for a reasonable price. I'm going to use those for now until I can fully restore and rebuild the 40" cast rims. They will be the final product.

So in the meantime I am looking for some used 12.4x38 tires that match or are close to matching. Any leads are helpful (SE PA area) but I'll be doing my own leg work as well. Hope this works out like I hope!
