Have a friend with 756 w/D-358 engine. He needs studs that bolt cylinder head to block. OEM quite expensive. ARP have studs. Anyone run into this and found replacement a little more reasonable ? Isn't a D-358 a 5.9L ? If so would something for 5.9 Dodge truck engine be same ?

Thanks for any info in advance !

I'm not completely familiar with the D358, being its a German engine it's probably metric, most likely 12mm. I had a Ford 6600 a few years ago that the dealer wanted a mint for head bolts. I ended up sourcing a set of 1/2" head studs of the proper lengths with washers and nuts for half of what ford wanted. You'll need to figure out which size thread and what lengths you'll need. The 5.9 cummins might be close enough to use, but I can't say for sure. If ARP doesn't pan out you could try http://www.extreme-studs.com and see what they can do.

Thanks Mike and WC ! I should have remembered that D-358 is the German Built engine. See what retirement does to you ! (grin)

They are 9/16-12x123 mm and 9/16-12x145 mm. 12 of each.

12mm metric threads (no 13mm are used as far as I Know) are M12X 1.75 (course) M12X1.5 (medium) or M12X1.25 Fine pitch.
14mm are M14X2 (course) M14X1.5 (fine)
Just a effort to understand. Jim

Have to make this metric and German engine bolt size more interesting. The threads in the block might be US thread. The book shows 9/16 threaded head bolts. Been a long time since I worked on one but I seem to remember this, all bolt heads were metric, shank was metric, but the threads in block were US. Also, those engines used about four different grades and types of bolts during their time so you had to know which bolt for the correct torque values.

Are you sure they are 9/16 and not M14x2? They are very close.
If they are 9/16 deere and later fords use 9/16 bolts. For 14mm Arp, A1 or extreme studs might be able to help. If you can use bolts don't overlook McMaster Carr and other fastener sources.

If I remember correctly the only metric bolts in the D358 are the ones that hold the counter weights on the crankshaft.

Mike, 9/16 is the size listed in catalog. Interesting that catalog show 9/16 as diameter but list length in mm. 123 mm and 145 mm length for the two studs used. However in description they also state 9/16 x 5 for one part number and 9/16 x 5 3/4 for the other stud.

At your suggestion I looked at ARP Stud website and appears they only list metric studs ? I will check some of other companys you suggested .

Thanks, Bill
