F-12 oil pressure is too high

I just finished a F-12 rebuild. Before rebuild it read medium to high on an old JD gauge. Now it pegs the same gauge even at low idle.

Full tear down. New cam bearings, old rod & bottom bearings. New pleated oil filter as old one was metal 'washable.' Have good oil flow to rockers. I did disassemble the oil filter base during restore, but has been more than five years so may have reassembled incorrectly.

I have an appropriate gauge for F-12 en route, but suspect I will still have high oil pressure.

What should the pressure be? Is there a relief valve I should check? Do I have a real problem?

take a 100 lb glycerin filled guage and screw it right into the block and check the pressure. you need numbers before you can say the pressure is to high.

I second the motion to install an actual guage and see what the actual psi is. You may have the wrong guage . The other F-series used a splash lubed engine with low pressure and if you put that guage on your pressure lubed engine with much higher pressure , it will peg the guage . You could still have an issue with the pressure relief valve/spring if you had all that apart , but I would want to know actual numbers before you start worrying .

some of those oil filter bases have a big nut holding the check spring and ball on its seat shims may be required under that nut to adjust pressure

I have rebuilt several f-12/14s. When I do a rebuild, I also rebuild/regrind the oil pump clearance. New everything. I usually get 60-80lbs pressure after a rebuild. I have one f-12 that gives 100psi and I have swapped five oil filter bases (where the pressure relief is located) as well as rebuild several oil pressure reliefs. Still 100lbs. I think I got the clearances too close.

in the F series tractors, only the F12/F14 were pressure lubricated to the crank and mains. The Regular, F20, and F30 were all roller bearings and splash lube to the connecting rods.

So, the F12/F14 will run oil pressure higher than the other F series tractors. In fact, they are in the same range as the Letter series. The F12/F14's took a different gauge than the F20/F30. Think about your post. You are using a JD gauge on an IHC engine. Get the right gauge.
