hello I have a 1958 farmall 460, it was running great the the head blew in the #1 cyl. I have replaced the head but now when i go to start it it cranks for along time the it will start run for a couple of min then die, i`ve checked everything i know and i`m asking for any help you can give. thanks in advance!!

thank you both, it is gas ,after doing some more reading in the forums I m going to check the adjustments on the carburetor, I didn t change anything but you never know float could be stuck now or something else.

Did you reset the rocker arms, or did you just reassemble all the parts as they were with the old head?

better get the valve lash set first.warm up for an hr,then retorque the head, then reset the valves. then set the timing, then set the carb., all in that order.
those 460 gassers are cold blooded and need time to warm up also. even keeping the choke out about 1/2 way helps till warm. that is one engine that needs the heat riser valve on the manifold working.

I would sure run the valves just on principle and check the intake manifold gasket as well as the one at the intersection of the manifold and the carb.

I have checked the rockers and set the gap at .027, the intake manifold gasket checked out ok, pulled the carb and for it full of crud so will now rebuild the carb and try again, it is getting good spark and the timing is correct. thank you everyone for your input and ideas.

thanks all for your help, I finally got the old girl running,The only glitch now is that it backfires every so often, starts great and runs great for a minute or so then backfires and goes back to running great, any ideas on this?

Maybe there's still something floating around in the carb. If it doesn't straighten out on it's own add some sort on magic juice to the gas. Like Seafoam.

Backfiring is a sign of timing miss. Which can be caused by a sticky/bad valve, bad valve seat, bad gasket seal, bad plug/wire, out of time, whisker (carbon/dirt in plug electrodes), spur on the points and a hot spot in the cylinder among others.

A good way to check for a bad gasket, vacuum leak, is to spray WD-40 around the manifold and carb and see if the idle RPM changes.
