Farmall 400 TA question

I am working on a farmall 400 and somtimes when you let out on the clutch with the torque amplifier in the back position the tractor will just sit still and make noise but wont move. Most of the time the torque amplifier works just like it is supposed to. I adjusted the cluth and TA to the book but it made no difference. I am wondering if i am going to have to replace the TA or if their is another adjustment of some kind. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

replacing the Whole TA is not needed. It is going to be necessary to split the tractor both at the engine and at the trans/TA section. The one way ramp/rollers is failing. The sprag style seems to be the most robust. Kevin Meier (posts on here regularly) sells components. So does this site. One to avoid is called Mechanical diode. Hy capacity is also well respected. Replacing the whole TA is indeed not necessary, but there are several other wear parts in that TA unit that may also need replacement. Bearings, seals, the clutch and pressure plate...

Maybe not now, maybe not ever, but after you've gone to all the work of splitting the tractor twice, do you really want to have to go back and do it AGAIN?

I agree that you will need to remove the TA housing to repair the TA assembly. Here are a couple pictures of a stand that I have designed to handle this TA housing. I also made this cut-a-way from a 300 utilty, for the Red Power Roundup Shows. The 300 housing is just a little longer compared to the 400 but the Ramp and Carrier are identical in all OSTA. The cut-a-way should give you an idea what's inside. Let me know if I can help.

An individual at an auction, said that he sold a 300 to a friend. The TA worked until his friend adjusted it to the book specs. So he went over to his friends house and adjusted it until it worked again. These are old worn machines. Chances are that it needs some worn parts replaced, but you are not out anything if you continue playing with the linkage. Mine was like yours is now and I really enjoy having that TA working as it should. I replaced the pins, springs, and rollers.
Good luck

Many years ago, a customer , right out side of the shop, adjusted , by the book his TA. When he got done, he had it so far out of adjustment it was terrible. So, I adjusted it for him. He had a helper also so you have to know how read the book. It is not rocket science. Clearance and release.

Some already give you a answer. Cold hard facts are if tractor pulls with lever forward and fails to go when back no amount of adjusting will make it right.
