424 trans leak

Hi all, I have a 1967 IH 424 that is leaking trans fluid. the plate on the bottom is the problem. (poor design it looks like) I have new gasket material and plan to replace it, but am not sure how much fluid I will be dealing with. My book says either 3 gallons or 17 if I have a front mounted pump. This tractor has power steering and is plumbed to run (slowly) a three point splitter. is the PS pump what they mean? I would like to catch and reuse as much of the fluid as I can, but want to be ready for the amount. Thanks for any help.

I will qualify my answer in that I have no experience with that model but it sure looks like that front cover with the two bolts showing is what you are referring to. That looks like a dry housing which would mean the transmission input is what is leaking inside of that housing and the cover is just a dirt plate. Excuse me if I am wrong. I would just loosen plate a bit if that is the case and you will only lose what has leaked into that housing and then you can see where it is coming from.

You got it Pete! That's the clutch housing. Meant to be dry.
Heyseed, by the look of your machine it has not got the additional speed amplifier fitted to the front of the transmission.? If you are certain that it is indeed transmission oil leaking, It should be a fairly straight forward replacement of the input shaft seal on the transmission. Yes, the tractor has to be split, but they are quite simple to work on and the seals are a standard size. I did my 434 a couple of years ago on my own.
All the best with it, they are a good little tractor.

Hi Hayseed, remove the tin cover from below the clutch housing then look up into the housing to see were the oil is coming from. It could be coming from the gearbox input shaft or the big cast plug that seals the bottom shaft. You can run the tractor with the cover removed to see were the oil is coming from. MJ
