Starter Help

Hey guys! Plowed snow with my sisters 606 last night, went out to clean up some drifts tonight, and all I get is a click. Took apart all connections, cleaned and reassembled, still just a click. Loosened starter to see if it was jammed, still nothing. Battery is good. Finally removed starter and bench tested, it engages...meaning the gear jumps forward, but it doesn't spin. Starter was new this last spring. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Probably a stuck brush. carefully loosen the through bolts, and pull the end plate out a half inch (no more) and look at the brush holders. to see if they are holding the brush/s off the commutator. Jim

If the drive gear moves forward that tell you the solenoid is moving the lever but the contact disk is most likely not making contact to engage motor. Just go directly across the two large terminals on solenoid to see if motor turns. I would bet you got some moisture in the solenoid from blowing snow or the contacts are just plain bad. You can take solenoid end cap off and turn contacts. Do so carefully so as not to break wire off on terminal leading to starter and the small terminal.

Pete 23's idea also has merit. Getting an original starter rebuilt is often a better value than new when new is from the land of almost rite. Jim

I have found solenoids where the insulator between the contact disk and pin was made from a type of plastic that couldn't take the heat. When the insulator melted the disk would no longer make contact with both studs when the plunger moved the pin.
