ENGINE STUCK

Have a engine that stuck up, was free with no issues a few weeks ago,now wont turn over. Already pulled starter to check bendix and that wasn't the issue. Is not stuck in gear. Tried turning it over with crank and no go don't want to budge, removed spark plugs no sign of moisture. Its on a MD. What's your thoughts?????? Thanks jim.

Best thing would be pull the head and check the cylinders let a good penetrating oil sit in cylinders and check daily

A few weeks! Block down the clutch to see if the trans or finals are frozen in ice! If it turns with the clutch down warm it before moving it to avoid breaking parts. Warm then drain out the water. If not Ice:
It should easily come loose. (assumes it didn't stop, shall we say, suddenly)
Put a teaspoon full of ATF in each spark plug hole (with it in gas mode) then wait a day and try to move the crank with a small pry bar in the starter hole on the ring gear. Jim

Fill in the blanks. Has it been where water may have gotten into the transmission?? Did you try to turn it over with the clutch down?? How cold it it. Pull the plugs out and then try to turn it over with the clutch down. If it spins then try with the clutch up. Maybe water in the transmission frozen. If it still does not turn over fill with ATF and let sit a week then try again

if you have water sitting under the flywheel it will freeze and be the same as a siezed engine. have a w6 that does that. soon as it gts cold no way can crank it. when it warms up all is good.

just a thought ... I went to Walmart and bought the cheapest $9 women's blow hair dryer, really cranks out the heat, I use it in the shop to wamr things up / thaw things out really good.

The rear end from the clutch back is free and rotates smoothly, it is defenitly in the engine, checked under fly wheel and so abstructions. It was warm over the weekend mid 40's don't think it is caused by ice. Previous owner had engine turning over with no issues now it wont budge. I already put atf in the cylinders to soak. Just trying to eliminate things before I pull the head. It is a smd with live pump, could the pump be causing the issue or is it most likely a stuck rotating assembly? Jim

I would try to turn it backwards by puttin the trans in neutral and turning the PTO in the reverse direction. (or belt pulley If it has one) if it will turn backwards a few degrees, then go forward to see if the rotation stops in the same place. If it does, I would pull the head! Jim

are you in an area, with freezing weather?

had a farmall cub, motor turned over freely, when i bought it. later it would only turn part way and then would not turn all the way. had moisture in # 2 cylinder and rusted the cylinder walls.

You have a real puzzle there. I don't think a engine would rust up in a few weeks. If that was the case all my tractors would be froze up. The only thing that comes to my mind is maybe it dropped a valve. That can be checked by just removing the valve cover.

Does the crank move at all?, even to just wiggle in the bearings?

You may be on the right track with the hydraulic pump. Maybe water in the hydraulic pump/lines is frozen and holding the pump.

We revived a 400 last year where the hydraulic system was literally full of water.

You ever pull an MD head? Price the head gasket?
