CUB front crank haft seal

Do I need to remove the front engine cover on a 1951 CUB in order to remove & replace the crankshaft oil seal ? (crankshaft pulley has been removed)

It is hard to remove and you need a good puller. A lot of times the pulley will brake. A little heat also helps.
When you put the pulley back on, the end of the crank shaft is threaded so you can press the pulley on with a long bolt and washer setup.

Yes and No. Most likely no. But it depends on the previous installation of the front cover. When installing the front cover, it is important to install the front seal and crankshaft pulley before tightening it down. This centers the front cover on the crankshaft. If the front cover was properly installed it should be centered.
Seal. There are two parts numbers. One for the seal only and the other for seal and wear sleeve kit. Some after market sources use the kit part number for the seal only. If you need the kit with the wear sleeve, make sure you are getting the kit, not just the seal.

a good air impact gun sure helps put her back on too.

when i pulled the one on my C, even with a backing plate the 70$ pulley broke... sometimes you can't win. ;)

While it can be done with the cover in place, I strongly recommend removing it. The cover is pretty thin and has NO support in that area other than where it bolts to the oil pan.
