Power Steering.

I'm here to bother you guys again. I would like to check the power steering fluid level on my IHC 340. That is if the power steering runs off its own pump and reservoir. I would also like to know what type of fluid is used in this system? I have ordered an operators and shop manual, but they won't be here for a while, so I have to bug you guy's until they arrive.

The 340 power steering should run from the tractor
hydraulics ,however they could have put something on
that isn't factory do you see a belt driven pump ?

Thanks guys for the information. it was very helpful.

In another thread I had mentioned that the front wheels seemed out of sync. I figured out what the problem was. The pitman arm on the left side wasn't placed on the splined gear box shaft correctly. Whoever worked on it last had even maked the parts with a chisel, but still had it off the mark by four or five splines. I pulled the pitman arm off, straightened the left wheel to match the right side wheel, and put the pitman arm back on. Now it steers as it should.

Another problem I was having with this tractor was that it would only run with the choke all the way out. I figured that the carburetor was gummed up from sitting unused for a time. I put two cans of Seafoam in the tank the other day. When I ran it today the carburetor worked just fine. Anyone else use Seafoam? I usually am not a mechanic in a can believer, but this stuff has pulled my butt out of the soup quite a few times.

(quoted from post at 23:57:05 01/04/15) Very inexpensive repair. Good deal. Jim

Jim,
I got off lucky this time. I kept thinking about the information I got on this site and it finally came to me. Dad always told me that when you are working on something start with the simple things and work your way to the more expensive stuff as you go.

Sorry about the doom-and-gloom diagnosis on your steering last week. Glad to hear it was simple. When you said the steering went out-of-sync, I imagined the wheels just popping in totally opposite directions.

I'm with you on the Seafoam. Frankly I don't care if it really does anything or not, in my experience it works.

People believe in snake oil cures all the time, such as dumping marvel mystery oil into their diesel fuel, or 2-stroke oil, or Lucas products, even lead substitute additive. If they can have their magic elixirs, I can have mine.
