Left side directly opposite the starter... about an 1 1/8" hex plug. (maybe 1 1/4")

Jimmy. if you drain the system using the drain plug down low on the left side below the filler plug it will hold 5 1/2 quarts of IH Hy-Tran or equivalent hydraulic fluid. If not changing the fluid out but only adding additional fluid then just fill to 1/2" of the bottom of the fill plug opening. There isn't a check plug like on some IHC tractors, Hal.

The 240 holds a lot more than 5-1/2 quarts. My manual's at home but isn't it more like 5-1/2 GALLONS? The rear end is part of the hydraulic reservoir.

Matt, The 240 Hydro-Touch reservoir is located in and part of the clutch housing and does not share fluid from the transmission and differential housing. It is clearly addressed in the Preventive Maintenance Manual for the 240 series tractors on page 47. If the tractor has factory power steering the required quantity increases to 6 quarts. The required quantity in the transmission and differential housing is 5 gal with PTO. Both reservoirs are noted to use IH Hy-Tran fluid, Hal.
