Farmall 450 Heavy Duty Sprague T/A

I purchased a heavy duty sprague T/A to install into a 450. Having worked with two other T/A installations on our SM-TA tractors the project was moving along on the center section rebuild until I separated the T/A carrier and sprague. Needless to say I am regretting that now.

Does anyone have any helpful tips to rejoin the two halves without having to take the unit apart further? The issue is not enough clearance to reinsert the carrier hub into the sprague bearing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

take the 4 bolts and e clips ou t of the cast. Clamp the topshaft in the vise so the carrier is upside down. Replace the spring steel spacer over the bearing. Put the ramp and sprang over the carrier while twisting the sprag slightly counter clockwise. Tap with a hammer until seated over the bearing. Place the cast iron spacer. Slide the back gear and cast assembly back into the carrier. Take out of the vise and reinstall the 4 bolts and e clips. Clamp on one of the 4 mounting ears in the vise. If you did all this correctly the carrier will turn clockwise and lock up counter clockwise. If you need more help call 5153680533

Kevin,

Thank you very much for the detailed reply and I appreciate
your offer to talk about this on the phone. I included photos of
the unit I bought, but do realize you are already extremely
familiar with what I am working with already.

My intent with the photos was to verify that the sprague
bearing is indeed installed correctly as shipped to me. I ask
this due to the direction of rotation you referred to.

As illustrated in the photo of the bearing, the left side of the
sprague has the more pointed edge while the right side has
more of a machined radius.

Thanks Again!

Tom

after you remove the bolt and ramp assembly. Put the ramp on the carrier as I said and you can check it to lock up counter clockwise. That will tell you if it's installed correctly.

Nice discussion. The TA whole body with planetaries rotates in the same direction as the engine and trans input shaft when in direct drive. When in TA reduction, the housing and planetarys are free to rotate backwards CCW looking from the front of the tractor. This motion is stopped by the sprag clutch, and held stationary (torque reaction forces). The sprag is not a ratchet, it is a series of wedges that release clockwise and wedge against the smooth surfaces (inner and outer) when turned CCW. If you know this already, my intention is to clarify for others as well. Jim

Kevin and Jim,

Once again thank you both for providing your knowledge and insight.

Over the past several years I have read the numerous answers and solutions that both of you, as well as many others, have taken time to share with the forum members.

I just became an "official" member of this site a couple of days ago and gained the immediate result of new friends reaching out to help.

Thank You,

Tom
