706 glowplug switch

why does my 706 glowplug switch smoke and get hot? this is a brand new switch. do i have the wires on the wrong contact?

yes , agree you need a switch that will handle the amps for the glow plugs, otherwise it will just burn up the switch.

got it from Orscheln's all it says on line is "up to 35 volts DC". dang thing was smoking and getting very hot when i was pushing the button. could hardly hold it in, guess my thumb isn't what it used to be.

Is new switch rated to carry a high amp load?Is wiring and connections good?Best bet is to wire in a relay. You can use your new switch to activate a relay and the relay can carry the load between battery and glow plugs.Don't forget to fuse your new glow plug circuit. You can look online for common relay wiring diagrams.

Forgot to mention,if you use a relay you need to run a heavy gauge wire between battery, load side of relay and glow plugs.10 gauge wire would be good.

Since that circuit is about 55 amps a 10 gauge will be a bit small.

A 560 has 2 10ga in parallel for that system. Also no relay.

Is the switch for that tractors glow plug or did you get a generic switch???

What happened to the original switch??

Have you checked any of the items above yet?

Your right,I used 8 gauge wire when rewiring my 656.My bad.Relay much better than factory wiring. My 656 wiring diagram shows glow plug circuit picks up power from battery via the large terminal on starter solenoid from there through a 7 pin connector then to a junction block, from there to glow plug meter then through switch and back through 7 pin connector, then to another junction block where it splits into two parallel legs to glow plugs.Thats a long run of wire with many connections, lotsa potential for resistance in that circuit.I"m assuming the 706 is the same.Thank's

ya, them pin connectors can be an issue.

The 560 is simpler but still has some connections in it.

I do not know how a 706 is wired either.

Until the OP answers some of the questions it is not possible to help anymore

it's just a generic switch i'm sure looks just like the one that was in it. don't say anything about amps just heavy duty. I bought 12 gauge wire to rewire the glow plugs think someone told me that was ok.

You need read this thread about wire size and answer the questions people have asked if you help.

How is it wired now???

It is wired with factory wire to the switch. Red hot connects to one side of switch. Other side of switch goes to one side of gauge. Other side of gauge goes to the glow plug string. All original far as I know except the glow plug string is not very heavy and insulation on it is all cracked up. The reason I was going to remake it out of 12 gauge wire. Switch I picked up at prchlens not a lot of info on it. Was in the tractor section and is the same kind I took out least looks identical. Reason I replaced it was when I pushed button it did not activate the glow plug which now I'm thinking it might of been in the wiring somewhere because this switch does the same thing periodically.

You should have at least a 12 gauge wire to "each" glow plug.I use an 8 gauge wire to feed two 10 gauge parallel legs that feed three glow plugs each. This tractor will easily start in 15-20 degree temps after a minute of glow plug time.Make sure all your glow plugs are working too.Does your tractor start ok after using glow plugs?Sounds like you should carefully inspect the whole circuit, and renew or update if necessary.

Thanks to all for their help on this. Will check into it cowmechanic and kevin. will wire them and see where it goes from there,
