240 utility:any drawbacks or weaknesses?

If it has the early style (cable) connection from the Fast-Hitch forward to the control valve, they were a problem. Many were converted to a solid linkage, which helped a lot. Look in the Fast-Hitch section of the parts catalog to see the difference.

Check the rear hubs for looseness on the axle (should be a press fit).

Steering was not a weak point but beware that many steering parts do NOT interchange with the C through 230 models. If you do need steering parts, they may be hard to find.

Other than the above areas to check, I think they were a pretty good tractor. Unlike the larger tractors of the time, they do not have TA or IPTO.

I have a 240u with a fast hitch. Handy little tractor. Good brush hog tractor. I loaded the rear tires. Nice to mow under trees.

Nice useful tractor but one of the main problems is replacement parts. Not a large number were produced and anything unique to the Farmall and International 240's is very hard to find and probably costly due to the scarcity. Other then that they are a handy barn lot or chore tractor except they are missing the desirable features of their time noted by Jim Becker in his response. They do have an engine driven hydraulic pump so you have full time hydraulics - power steering was available on them and is a very desirable feature especially for front blade or loader use, Hal.

(quoted from post at 09:16:47 01/01/15) IHC 240 utility;any reasons not to get one as a
chore tractor? Found one parked that looks solid and
unabused. should i get it?

Cons:
IMHO, steering IS a weak point. Mine has the cable feedback for the 3 point and it is touchy... move the lever 1/2" and the hitch doesn't move, move it another 1/2" and the hitch moves too far... can't just meter it up or down a little at a time. Mine had the factory 3 point which is basically a modified Fast Hitch and it has a special very short top link... don't expect to use a post hole digger with it, won't work. also don't like the fact a tractor built in 1958 does not have independent or live PTO.
Pros:
Engine is a proven C-123 and the transmission is about bullet proof for that size tractor. Has live hydraulics which is good.
Over all, not a bad tractor, but there are better ones out there if you can find them. I had a 1955 Super 55 Oliver and should have kept it, but I wanted one with a loader and PS and I had experience with a Super C and thought the 240U would be okay.

BTW without a loader, the steering may be okay.

Both the 240 Utility and Farmall are *VERY* close cousins of the Super C. You can make do with Super C parts in many instances where you can't find a 240 part.

Engine internals are a bit different but those parts can still be had. Valve stems are longer, for example, because the combustion chamber in the 240 head is much smaller.

The hydraulics share many common parts with the larger 460 and 560 tractors, such as valve bodies. You can eliminate the hydratouch feedback system altogether with a regular spool valve from a 460 or a 560.

Had mine now for 25+ years. Handy and almost
impossible to break anything, I think I have had the
base off mine once to replace the oil pump gasket
and thats about it. Mine is a later one and has
linkage with no cable. Steering is not a weak point.
The only thing is the older I get it's harder to get
on and off but that me and not the tractor.

Just a real nice solid tractor that will work and
work with little to no problems

(quoted from post at 12:18:11 01/02/15) Steering is not a weak point.

I'm certain the loader on mine has had something to do with the wear and tear on the steering. The front steering arm off the gear box had been replaced before I got it and needed replaced again when I bought it. I ordered a used gear and arm assembly from JP Tractor salvage and replaced them. The worm gear is still somewhat loose, but it's not getting any worse. Mine has an aftermarket Char-Lynn torque generator in the long steering rod beside the motor and a priority flow divider valve which robs enough flow that I lose my 3 point control at less than about 1/3 throttle. 3 point still does not respond well, maybe due to the cable feedback instead of the later rods.
