Farmall Super M VIN number?

Recently purchased Super M, nameplate missing. Is the serial number stamped anywhere else on the tractor? The engine serial number is 16573, will this help in finding the year of manufacture?

Engine went in a tractor August 1952. But the engine serial number won't tell you if the tractor had a Louisville or Farmall works serial number. Tractor serial number only on serial plate.

Yup, serial number is only on the serial plate. If that's gone, it is extremely unlikely that you will ever find the actual serial number. Your only shot would be to trace the tractor back to its original owner, and that original owner having the original bill of sale.

Another tool you can use to date the tractor is casting codes. They are on the larger cast pieces in the form of ##-%%-&, where ## is the month, %% is the day, and & is a letter code for the year.

X would be the letter code for 1952. Y for 1953.

Thanks for help. I found the code on right side of trans. The markings show date of 2/21/X (1952). Also found 8/52 stamped on carburetor flange surface. What year SM had two bolt starters and what year had three bolt starters?

Serial numbers F-28175 and L-504802 and higher used the 3 bolt starter with gas, kerosene or distillate engines. That started in March 53. All diesels used the 3 bolt starter but they were different starters from serial number 28181 up.
