Moving 5x6 Bales with 300

I have some 5x6 second cutting grass hay that I
need to handle.
I pick them up with 3 pt spear on a 2 pt
conversion. They lift fine and the front end
starts to float. I have to steer with brakes if
going forward. But in reverse the front rides the
ground . I only move them a 100 yards. Do other
persons use a 300 for this? What's the guess of
weight of a 5x6 bale?

Seriously look at bolting something heavy to the front of that tractor. It doesn't have to be 1000lbs, even 100lbs will make a big difference.

A pair of 2X4X1/4" channel irons about 3 ft long, drilled and bolted to the bolster on each side, can be used to support a 2'X3' wooden box with 2X8 sides. Use metal corners to reinforce the box, Put rocks in it or other. It is also handy as a carry box. Jim

The question of the front end staying down while in reverse is the same thing that happened to me when I was trying to climb a long steep hill in the woods with my 300 with a PTO winch on the back. Going forward the front end would leave the ground, but in reverse it climbed the hill with no problem. It comes down to the principle of the equal and opposite reaction. I can't think how to describe what I mean but if you think about the force acting either to turn the wheels relative to the tractor or to turn the tractor relative to the wheels I think it will make sense.

Well that bale could weigh in at some place between 1200 and 1500 Lbs and on a 300 it will be vary vary light in the nose . And for safety myself i would want no less then 600Lbs. up ft. And that may not be enough . We do 4x4 rounds and handle them for the most part with a skid steer that has a lifting capacity of 1750 lbs. BUT when you handle one of the 4x4 silage bales you want to use the old skid steer with the rear weights . That same 4x4 round silage bale on the three point bale spear even makes the 806 really light in the ft. Keep in mind that it does not take much to flip a tractor over and you do not want to be the one we read about . So add weight to the ft. more is better .

I have an old IH 2400 round baler that makes 5x6 bales. They will make the front of an unweighted M floaty!

As per the other replies, add some channel or angle iron rails onto the tractor frame and put a wheel weight or stack of old cylinder heads up front. Won't take a whole lot as you have more leverage the further forward you go.

I would first try a set of 6788D front wheel weights, (42 1/2 pounds each) if that doesn't do it, you can add another set ( 2 weights per wheel) that bolt right on.
The frame weights that bolt on each side of the front bolster are really salty but they weigh 125 lb each.
362959R1 left hand,
362960R1 right hand.
I have seen some "custom" weight brackets made & used on F300 pullers that used the later IH suitcase weights out front.

find some ih rear wheel weights the two piece are easyer to work with and bolt them to the frame rails there are enough holes so that you can make them work . dad use to put the rock bar through the frame on my oliver 77 and hang front weights on it to hold the front down

I found some suitcase weights at an auction and used them on my 350D. I can easily and safely carry my 10 wheel rake with the three point on any ground. 300 pounds does it. PK

Dads had a similar set-up on his 460. He had a local shop make a bracket and added a few suitcase weights to the front. His bales were pretty darn heavy, guy that baled for him had a Vermeer that really packed in the hay. The 460 was still light on the front, but it was steerable.
