I'm considering buying a 706D (ran when parked :) ). Probable stuck engine (sat for a year with exhaust open), hard to shift into reverse(from previous owner), got 1 good rear tire, missing tin..... worst case, what would the scrap value be? I have to arrange transport before anything else.

Scott

Tractordata.com lists it at around 4-5 tons for weight multiply that by scrap price (around where I am about $200/ton is average)so maybe around on high end(tires/fluids ect that is to be removed) $1000. Parting out might get higher. Get it running/working all the way(guessing $1000+for engine rebuild parts) the price can be upwards of (average (condition, location pending)) $4000-$6000(rough guess) for complete tractor

Thats what I had in mind. They want $1000 for the tractor plus I'll have to get it hauled about 125 miles. I don't need the tractor but I want it and if I can get it running I can do most of the rehab myself. Someone needs to put a sticky post up warning about how these old tractors can be habit forming!

I'm sure my wife gets a little nervous every time I go to an auction. I've got 2 I'm working on and 2 that are in the queue and I still look at more :D But they are all destined to be back in the field except for the B, while it will be back in the field, it's more for fun and reliving fond memories.

Which engine is it?

dad has a 67 with the german diesel you can't wear
one of them out. The parts are sure pricey.

No idea on the engine. I've got a full schedule until the 30th and told the guy if he still has it then I'll go look at it. It gives me a few weeks to think on it and if someone else gets it, it wasn't meant to be.

Scott, $1000-- H3LL NO! The condition that thing is in , as you described. UNLESS the current owner can put the Key in the slot, Turn right, push the Starter Button and it Screams to life I seriously doubt it! Scrap value is $500 there abouts! Poor tires only one is any count, Chances are it not destine for much life. Hard shifting! minus tin, Scrap value at best! NO Way in H3LL is it worth $1000, Hauling will vary some good rule of thumb is $2.00/ running mile, Loaded ... 125x$2.00 = $250 just to get it home. I bought a tractor 3 yrs ago not running in 4 yrs, not stuck had to get a last minute wrecker/Slide Truck to get it winches up on and hauled home cost me $400 for about 125 mile haul. so be prepared for the worst.
For him to get what a scrap yard will pay He has to haul it himself, or have it hauled - the ave of $500 the scrap yard will pay, minus any cost he incurs, he nets not a lot. Offer him $500 Cash in $100 bills wave in under his nose!, Set 2 fifty's in 2 different pockets just in-case he plays hard ball Go to $600 and be prepared to walk away from it.Not in this life time is it worth $1000. I bought a not running 706, 282D, 18 month ago gave $400, Nice tin minus the Steer pedestal Cowling, Rubber 75%, 3 sets of split IH Wts, Fast hitch! Dual tire tricycle fronts,
4 digit Serial #!!!
that is my honest opinion
Hope you get it traded for!

Here we go with the fairytale tractor prices again...

A $400 running 706 is a FLUKE at best. You either bilked some poor old farmer out of his prized tractor on his death bed, or it was a good friend that basically gave it to you.

Around here if a 706 GAS runs and drives, it's a $3000+ tractor regardless of how it looks. Yes, they actually SELL at that price. Diesels are in the $5000 range. I saw a couple of non-running gassers bring $1500-$1800 at an auction last year.

I do agree on the scrap. Scrap prices are down, nowhere near $200 right now, and you're not going to get top dollar for a whole tractor because they have to dispose of the fluids/tires and cut it up.

Thanks for the replies. I know buying old iron is a crap shoot at best. I figure if he still has it after the 1st of the year I'll go look at it and try to do a little trading with him. I have a friend with a trailer large enough to haul the tractor and another friend with a truck to do the job so I might get it hauled for fuel and a favor to be paid at a later date. The engine may not be stuck but I won't know until I check it myself. If I could get it running for a couple hundred $ it would be a great buy. With the cost of new tractors today I think a re-buildable old one has real value.

scrap is down now, ok, guess it has been a while since I checked, but even if it was up: $1000 for scrap is generous(high end,as I said before). Parts tractors and non-running complete tractors are generally priced higher than scrap anyway. With running higher yet.
