what was that slow 1st gear for

My question is on the X6 option on a M, that was just the 1st gear was slower,2nd thru 4th was the same right? And what was the main purpose for it picking corn, i was too young ,my dad would not let anybody run the picker but him ! But i think he picked in 2nd gear

Common for them to be called picker gears. But they were for any PTO work that would overload the PTO or implement if the ground speed was to fast. Also used in some applications were a slower speed was desired. First and reverse were slowed down with no change in other gears.

The slow first gear was really handy for baling hay also. Baled a lot with dads MD and either the 440 or 445 baler dropping bales so close they would almost touch. Lots easier than clutching in and out of first gear with SM, of course the SMTA's that I use now are even better.

Jim in ma is right most tractors don't have a slow enough first gear for using a transplanter for setting out vegetable sets. We set out three rows in one bed at a time. Use a case 1210 has creeper gear for the job.

Would have been poor corn if he picked in second gear. I spent many hours on an M with a 24 and 20 then a 2MHD in first gear.

Well you cannot slow down or speed up a horse and their walking speed is about same as standard low on most tractors, possibly closer to second on a lot. And there is hundreds of acres planted with transplanters around pulled by horses. We have weekly or multi weekly produce auctions for those produce items set out by those horse pulled planters.

Ok i am in a grain area, no vegetable setting, here, all the M @ H's I have looked at, only seen 1, that had that X6 option. On my dads farm we had 1/2 river bottom, and the other half was sand, so we did have some poor corn, if it got dry. Thanks guys

How about for a field cutter (chopper)? Dad had a couple JD 60s with a slow 1st gear and I've seen a time it took all you had in 1st to chop 10' high silage corn and pull a loaded chopper box.

Good decent corn. If tried to go too slow ground speed just ground up the stalks instead of pulling them thru.

(quoted from post at 14:58:10 12/07/14) Picker was always second for an H, never found a need for first low gear.

A low gear or other gearing options would be indicated on the end of the serial. X1A, X1G, etc. X1A is low first gear. X1G is low first and high fourth.
I have an X1A, its slow in first and reverse. I've never seen an H that had a second gear any different from the next.
