with regulator kit installed tractor cranks and runs, but has a very noticeable knock. pulled plug wires one at a time with tractor running at idle, when pulled #2 noise stopped. does this indicate wrist pin or rod bearing problem or what? thanks for any info

Man, get it going and now something else!

Another possibility is a broken piston skirt. I would drop the pan and check things out.

rustyrelic, I am with Centex Farmall here on this! Drop the Pan! you can catch and reuse if the oil is really clean, If it has settled out and you find a bunch of other nastyness. or metal in the bottom of the pan. You can do a visual and hard check of the Crank and Rods to see if something is a miss.
Another thought is the top of the piston seperated from the main body of the piston & shirts and the piston is "Slapping" together when running, with No fire going to that spark plug to send the top portion down on the power stroke the top may very well stay up at the top end of the stroke so NO Slapping, Knocking sounds occurs when the spark plug wire is removed!
Hope this Helps!

Hey John, if this was the case, what was pushing the top of the piston down on the intake stroke, prior to removing the plug wire?

Arnold, "Vibration" It will not have to move much, In College a buddy of mine Had a pickup with a Chevy 292 6 cylinder It made a ton of racket when he got after it, idling It was barely even noticeable. Could be even the Intake Valve opening giving it a nudge too!
Hows that for 2 reasonable Scenarios?

Make sure you don't have a spun rod bearing on
that #2 cylinder....time is of the essence, don't
wait until your crank is ruined! I had that
happen on my 460 Farmall--caught it just in time!
Good luck, Hugh

Well, I guess that sounds reasonable enough. If it was indeed a valve whacking it around I bet it would still do it with the wire off. The last piston I personally broke was a 235 Chevy and it was bad loud for the whole six block drive home.

it seems my next order of business will be to drop oil pan and have look see. I think I hope the problem will be piston up. the good thing at this point is the ta works, as I started to back tractor off trailer did not know it was in hi range as I did not load it. clutch released right at top, glad I had good grip on steering wheel and all body functions.
