thinking about doing some antique tractor pulling.does anybody have any comments on how well a 54 super wd9 might do? how about some suggestions on upgrades to improve the performance of the tractor while staying within the rules? the tractor is set up with 23.1-26 tires which i replaced with 16.9-26 trying for less floation more traction. it seems most pullers are not stock and i was just wondering if i could even be competitive or just frustrated. looking forward to your comments.thanks

Where are you located ? In short, find a club and get their rules. Wd9 can be competitive but not till you turn the pump up a little and add weight.

i am located in plymouth wisconsin. the tractor has these huge hubs that are about 1000 lbs each. dry weight no rider the swd9 weighs 9300 pounds. so i probably dont want more weight. as it is with fluids and my chubby rear i will have a hard time staying under 10000 lb class. would a w9 gas be easier to make a puller?

If you are going to pull a farm stock class, you will be okay. If you start jacking up the rpm's etc., you will end up in an open class. They check rpms'etc. In the open classes around home(western, pa), there are some super modified tractors. Some of these guys don't have a life other than pulling. It can be vicious and costly.

when my brother use to pull, if I remember, he averaged around half (150 ft) pull (the average "full pull" was 300) That was with stock WD9, and pulling a "homebuilt" eliminator. He pulled for a couple of years(just to get in the way more than anything) till the event quit having farm tractor pulls and went to only truck pulls (that I find pointless). In my personal opinion stock tractor pulling is more fun and enjoyable compared to truck or modified.

I am in louisiana but here w9's are heavy and weak compared to newer tractors, 706,806,560,660. This may not matter there but here horsepower is a necessity , traction is second, but without both you won't get any trophies.

I've got a SWD9 that I have pulled at local farm pulls. It weighs 8000. It has 2 factory wheel weight on each side and air in the rear tires it does pretty decent. Generally pulls against 55 Masseys G Molines etc. The 9s don't have enough power to add much more weight. I pull a gas W-9 in Div.II NATPA starting at 5500# and it seems to be fairly competitive with a stock 335 cu in.

KS9r did you cut down the factory hubs to mount the 9 bolt rims? I have a W9 I saved from being scrapped(it was an Amish tractor so its on steel)and thought about lightening it to do some pulling but nobody in my area has 9 bolt hubs on one that I know of.

Yes. Once I got my hubs off I saved them incase I want to take it back original and took a salvage set of hubs and plasma cut out the center and machined in the 9 bolt pattern. I tapped all the holes. It would probably be less expensive to drill holes and drive in the studs in the hub. On the tractor n the picture I'm running 16.9 x 34 tires and to keep the tractor narrow with the hubs you have to use a wheel with the center towards the center of the wheel(like original on 656,560, not the typical total reversed wheels usually used for duals
