Farmall 350 TA Troubles

Bought a 350 yesterday. The only thing wrong with it is that the TA grinds really bad when pulling back into low gear. While test driving I pulled back on the lever to a bunch of grinding. The tractor eventually slipped into low ta and i started to release the clutch but it began to lug the engine so I quit. Almost like it was stuck in 2 gears. Im pretty sure the ta is junk but was hoping someone would tell me that a much needed adjustment was in order. I have a feeling like the planetaries are shot. Just never heard one grind. Usually they either work or they dont.Thanks. AP.

It sounds like the little planet gears are junk. The actual shift into low range is done by a small dry disk clutch releasing & engaging, all gears are already meshing and the clutch directs power thru the proper set of gears.

I would NOT pull the TA lever back until you can get the TA replaced, and those teeth on those planet gears are tiny and fragile, bet some have sheared off, I wouldn't run the tractor much until fixed either.

May be able to remove the 3 bolt tin cover on center housing top and see if the T/A release bearing, bearing holder, fork and pressure plate fingers are intact or in operational condition as a first step. If you can't see enough through the small hole remove the complete top plate. That will also let you look at the T/A planet gears.

I dont know where you live, but I have the TA carrier and planetary Was for a project but it will I will never get to do> I would like to get rid of. Looks good to me. Bring me $75.00 and it yours. I live in NW ohio.

I am sorry, I dont want to get into shipping. That a heavy piece and would cost a lot to ship itto you..
Sorry
