My son has an old IH 440 baler he has been using for several years. The knotters are about worn out.
He baled 10000 bales of straw with it this year, but with the bale accumulator behind it, you have to get off the tractor every time it does not tie.
Does anyone know who might have new old stock knotters or good used ones. He will probably upgrade to a newer baler soon, but wanted me to ask here.
Thanks, Richard in NW SC

New knotters are going to run you more than the baler is worth and balers generally get junked because they won't tie anymore.

Your best bet is to upgrade, preferably to a New Holland or John Deere. When they miss, the next bale is generally tied. If they miss 2 in a row you've got BIG problems. When an IH baler misses, the chamber is full of loose bales no matter what.

we have a 47 ih baler that misses once in a while. but it don't bother us to much. We have found that if running a little less than governed 540 PTO RPM it doesn't skip as much. you may also look at SLIGHTLY adjusting the break or knives. If it turns to much or not enough or the knives are off the strings don't cut/tie right causing the miss. That's just my thought. If it works good for the most part no point in replacing.

Thanks for the input. I will forward it to my son.
The baler would be great for a small hay operation. But when you are trying to get a field ready for bean planting, you want to keep moving.
When I ran it a few years ago, I hated crawling up and down the JD 4020 steps to pull a missed bale. The friend that helps him now said that he had to get a newer baler or he was done.
I don't blame him.

Is this an all-twine Knotter 440??
The old IH knotter was pretty tempermental, the All-twines are pretty good...
How many bales is it missing??
1 in every 10,100 or 1000?
