1955 300U steering slop

My 1955 IH 300U has very annoying steering slop. The worst is when backing up. Regardless of which direction the tires are(all the way left, or right, or centered), The right tire will be where you want it, and the left tire will toe in real bad so that essentially its plowing dirt while backing up.
So what I'm saying is, there is slop in the steering box between the left and right tires.
while the tie rods arent great looking, I can verify that the other components are in acceptable condition.
I tried playing with the adjustment, which if anything made it harder to steer(probably too tight on the mesh) and took little if any slop out.
Opinions? Thanks.
 
Either one of the steering arms on the shafts (either side) is loose on the shaft, or one of the steering arms on the spindles is loose on the spindle. It could be a broken tooth in the box, or a box that is coming apart, but I place my bet on the above. Clean them both with carb cleaner and use a sharpie to make a mark on the shaft and arm (both at the box, and at the spindle top. Make it flop, and check. Jim
 
I agree with Jim but get you a manual it will tell
how to adjust properly , take apart and put
together.

I have verified that the spindles are not loose. The issue at hand has been clearly identified as an issue within the steering box. I will look for the manual and consider rebuilding the box. If any ideas pop up in the mean time I appreciate it.
 
Clean around your box and make sure it isn't coming
apart, I have a manual but can't do much with it,
could send copies if you can't find one.
 
The internal gears might be keyed to the shaft, the key might be wallowed out. If so the keyway can be re-cut to a larger size and the key replaced. Ben there several times (not on that box, but the process) Jim

The steering on my 240U was so loose that I'd have to turn the steering wheel almost 360 degrees before it would even begin to move the front wheels. Problem was the steering box. The worm and gear looked like new, but the key-way that connected the pitman arm to the steering gear shaft was extremely hogged out, as Jim mentioned. And the pitman arm bore was badly worn due to the motion caused by the worn key.

I was able to purchase a used pitman arm, but most importantly found an old German machinist who turned a new tapered sleeve that was pressed onto the old shaft.

Steering is tight now!

Here's what you'll be dealing with . . . this is not my 240U but an identical 240U one my friend Lou rebuilt . . .

Well if you know its not the spindles on the
axle and your drag link arms are tight on there
steering shafts.... Its in the box,most likely
one of the sector shaft gears has broken a
tooth,it is very common on these utilities,it
happened to mine twice over the 15 years I've
had it...
You mentioned the right side is steering ok and
seems tight? I know on the hydraulic version of
that box the right side is the "master" of the
2..
the right sector shaft is the one that meshes
with that silly worm/cam...
like I said before those sector gears get broke
pretty easy,I've broke them mowing tall weeds
and getting a front wheel into a corner
post,you won't know anything till you do some
more looking,if the gears are broke find a good
machinist/machine shop thats what I did..
those steering boxes are hard to find..
