I have a chance to buy a 300 utility parts tractor that has what looks to be a factory power steering unit. The tractor had a loader and backhoe originally. It does not currently run so I cant check the PS unit, any ideas how I can tell if it is any good?? The hoses look pretty old and cracked but hoses can be replaced....... Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You's Takes your chances with any PS unit on a 300U or350U. Ours has had a hard life, and is modestly tight but has had no loader on it. It was also carrying around a 3-14 FH plow, and a 8' FH disk much of its life. Check the arms for serious separate movement (hold one, move the other. 1/8" slop might be good measured at the end of the arm)
Kook for signs of clean leak tracks in the dirt on both shaft seals, and at the steering head. There is a welch plug near the bottom that can rust out or leak. The steering wheel should have about an inch of movement from straight ahead with a light spring pressure back to center. (this is the torque sensor and is not slop. 1/2 turn is not cool. Jim
