Mixing single wt. oil.

If you have a tractor with 30wt. oil in the crankcase can you add 10wt. to it as the tractor takes oil? I've got a 460 Farmall with fresh 30wt. in the case. I'd rather it was thinner for the cold winter. The tractor takes oil so can I add 10wt. as needed for the rest of the winter and then do an oil change in the spring with fresh 30wt. oil? Yes, I'm using IH low ash oil.

Wont hurt a thing. Years ago we had a 826D that was the main winter power on the portable Gehl mill, as at the time we didn't use 15w-40 in anything, we mixed 30w and 10w to get a 15 to 20w oil for all the long hours of heavy grinding calf and piglet feed.

No problem mixing straight wt oil. You will end up with a wt somewhere between the two mixed. You will not however have a multi-grade oil as that requires polymers among other additives.

Years ago at service stations they use to put oil in the car and had an oz. left in each can; they would dump that into a BULK oil container and sell it as BULK oil. many old cars, trucks and tractors lived on BULK oil
