charging a 6 volt

I've run my battery way down. I have a six volt charger and put it on at the 2 amp setting. I am getting a reading up to about 67% charged and it seems to stop here with no further charging. The charger has a 15 and also 40 amp setting. Will I damage the battery if I go on up to the 15 amp charge setting? thanks, Chuck

charging on 15 amp is just fine, even on 40 for 10-15 min is fine then switch to 15. then you can turn to 2 amps after an hr. and just let it charge overnight if you want. 2 amps is just a trickle and can be left charging for any amount of time.

What size battery? if it is a tractor battery, the higher settings are ok, even beneficial in some instances, but a small battery such as a lawn mower battery etc. the higher settings may boil it dry.

Chuck, I have several 6 volt tractors and I have found that if one gets way down you have probably lost a significant amount of the usefulness of that battery and will need replacement very soon. I have a charger similar to yours as it will give a percentage value of a full charge and when it stops someplace short of 100% and generally that is as high as it will go. Being at 67% you have probably lost one of your three cells. I keep 6 volt battery maintainers on them now and problem solved and they last far longer then before. My 12 volt lawnmower battery just finished it's third year still doing fine - I was lucky to get even two years out of one before I started using a maintainer on the mower, Hal.

If the charger shut off at that point, that is one thing, but if the indicator will not show any further percent while it is still pushing in a amp or two that is another thing altogether. You cannot hurt the battery by leaving that small charge on indefinitely as that is really no different than running the tractor with a normal charging system. I would let it on for another day or two and see if you can pick up some more per cent. Look in each cell to see if they are bubbling a little as they should for a few hours to reach full charge. Hydrometer will tell you a lot also as will a voltmeter. That indicator on the charger is a volt meter but not a real good one.
