1066 INTERMITTANT CLUNKING NOISE IN TRANNY

IT ONLY HAPPENED A FEW TIMES BUT SOUNDED TERRIBLE WHEN IT DID. MY PARKING BRAKE TURNBUCKLE BROKE ABOUT SAME TIME COULD THE 2 THINGS BE CONNECTED?

Do not move it until you get the park lock linkage fixed. Without the linkage being connected there is nothing to keep the park lock pawl from engaging the reverse gear. That is most likely the noise you are hearing.

I do think the only time I heard the clunk was in reverse. The clunk I suspect was either the prawl bouncing around or a broken gear tooth. Is there a simple way to check for a loose tooth. I will fix the linkage and find out if the prawl is still working to know if it is intact.

If the transmission is making a clunking noise, and it's worse in reverse, you have a missing tooth or teeth in the reverse gear. This is very common problem with the IH tractor.

i know it isn't loose on the gear i mean loose floating around in the case. just was wondering if there is a easy way to look and see if there is a tooth off.

You can remove the side cover and take a look. It will be the back gear on the top shaft.

If the tractor only has a click or clunk is reverse I would bet the gear has lost a tooth or more. If you don't have two consecutive teeth missing the noise will only be a click. Two consecutive teeth make a good clunk. If you have three consecutive teeth missing the tractor will jerk when backing up or possibly even stop.

there really was no pattern to the noise, in fact the last few times i ran it I heard no noise (very limited use just removed loader an ran it in my shop) I guess my hope is it was the prawl bouncing around making the noise. the inspection cover to peek inside on the left side kind of under the clutch?

Yes. That is where the drive for the front wheel assist would be mounted. The reverse idler shaft and gears are just behind the cover but you can get a limited view of the other gears through there. If the transmission oil is full you may lose about five gallons when removing the cover so best to drain some out first. You will sill get a small amount that is trapped between the cover and the housing but it isn't very much.

You may just want to repair the park lock and just try it in reverse to see if you hear any noise. There are a lot of those tractors that are being used with one or more teeth missing on that gear. It is only used for reverse and the park lock so you don't have to worry about it when you are moving forward.

the missing tooth or teeth floating around will not cause any further damage? what is the best method of retrieving it if further damage is probable

The broken teeth will either stay on the bottom of the transmission or if they migrate to the rear you may eventually find them in the filter cavity. It is not unusual to find shift linkage parts in the filter cavity.

A 1066 should have a spring loaded park lock, I think. If the turnbuckle breaks, the next time you shift into neutral the tractor should automatically snap into park and leave you unable to move it.
