Field repair of Super M inner axle bearing question

I am in the process of changing out a bad left inner
axle bearing( in my shop)it fell apart when I pushed
out the axle-- I have heard around that folks
changed these in the field but how did they get it
out when it fell apart as mine did i.e. the outer
race removed from the housing in the field

When ever I did not have the top cover off I much prefer to take the axle housing off. With a couple of dowel pins for guide and support I lifted many of them off years ago. That way you can clean out the junk from inside the axle housing and much easier to get those bolts out of retainer and race out. You will find the gasket under axle housing bad also.

Thanks for the response, I already have the top cover off and have been cleaning-- I have found 14 whole ball bearings and enough pieces to make the 15th and cages for 15--so I assume that the bearing had 15 balls correct?--- my only issue is going to be getting the outer race out of the housing--just wondering how they did it in the field when the bearing fell apart as mine did leaving nothing in place but the outside race

Either remove the axle housing as Pete posted or if the axle is of the housing use a small shaft with the right bent to catch on the race as you dive it in from the outside. Nobody said it was easy.
