Block Heater for 2424?

Since I've pulled the radiator on my 2424, I would like to install a block heater when I put things back together. There does not appear to be enough room in the bottom hose for anything - so what options do I have? Is there a plug somewhere in the block that comes out and an element heater screws in?

This is a gas engine, so its not critical. But I thought it would make winter starts easier on the old girl - I use it all winter for plowing snow and working in the woods.

thanks,
Tim

I've got a diesel 424 and am trying to figure out the same thing... small tank heater, maybe?

There is no provision for a block heater to screw in but there are two core hole plugs on the block behind the carburetor. I have my block heater installed in the front hole.

Owen - I see those two plugs, one on either side of the carb. How do they come out? Would I be able to get them out after all these years? What kind of heater goes in there? How does it attach?

Thanks,
Tim

The plugs, commonly called frost plugs, are just stamped steel. To get it out use a punch on one side and tap it in. as it starts to come loose it will start to twist in the block. Once you get it to start to turn carefully turn it until it is nearing 90°. Then use a pry bar to pull it out of the block. If the punch goes through the plug rather than getting it to move plan on changing them both.

The brand of heater that is common here is Kat's. They should be available at almost any auto part's store though you may have to order the correct one for your engine. I looked on line at the Kat's catalog and your tractor is not listed but a 504 is. That tractor uses a similar engine to the 2424. It list a 1 5/8" heater number 10603 or 11603.

If you go to the Kat's web site you will find a button for their catalog. There is information there about the different heaters and how to install them.

Thanks Owen, I may have my mechanic take a look at this. It sounds a bit dicey for my limited abilities. And he is an old tractor guy
