Is this normal?

I have a Farmall C, and I'm looking to replace the sediment bulb assembly. It appears that new ones at Fleet Farm have a 1/4 inch outlet, but the outlet on the existing one, currently in the tractor, has 5/16 inch tubing coming out of it going to the carb.

Also when I looked at other C's at a recent tractor show they all had 5/16 inch lines going to carb.

Can anyone shed some light on this? It doesn't make sense to me to use a 5/16 inch line with a 1/4 inch choke point.

Thanks.

I don't know, I normally put a rubber flex fuel line on to replace the copper tubing, that way I can put a fuel filter between sediment bowl and carb.

5/16" fuel line is correct for nearly all of the letter series Farmalls. I have also found that whoever packages those items for the farm supply type stores, really know very little about it, and packaging is often mis-labled, or maybe the item in that package is NOT what is supposed to be in it.

Just educate yourself before-hand. I've also learned that the genuine article from Case-IH may not be all that much more costly.

Not a Flame)) With a Gravity system, the solidity and reliability of steel line is considered best practice. Fuel filters in a gravity system need to be designed for that task, common plastic filters are a source of frustration with low force transfer of fuel. Jim

I went through the exact same frustration recently on my 'C'.
I think the sediment bowls have become generic with 1/8'' pipe outlets. I could not find an adapter locally to connect to the original fuel line, 5/16''
Some of the assemblies for sale out there include the adapter but I could not find it by itself.
I ended up ordering another assembly that included the adapter. Some suppliers offer it that way and some don't.
Works good once done. I wanted mine stock as possible.
Good luck
Dennis

I'm not a big fan of the sediment bowl. Blasphemy on this site, I know. I use 3/8"th brass fittings, pictured, as a replacement. It incorporates a dirt leg for the big chunks of rust and the inline fuel filter from NAPA is specifically designed for gravity flow. I have a 53 Farmall Super H that I reconditioned 4 years ago. I intentionally am not changing the inline filter I installed then till it plugs. So far so good.

Any parts store should be able to go from 1/4 NPT to compression 5/16 tubing. The fitting might even come out of your old sediment bowl.

Or you could just get the right sediment bowl assembly from a different source...

The one "Farm Fleet" is trying to sell you is WRONG.

It may be hard to maintain fall without a low point using a rubber hose. I have tried rubber but converted to steel as soon as it became obvious that the up draft carburetor would not work well without a dependable fuel supply. I have made several fuel lines from new break line stock and they have worked just fine. Original equipment was not copper but steel for the letter series.
