2424 Thermostat Replacement

I had to pull the radiator off my 2424 and figured I should replace the thermostat at the same time. I've never seen a thermostat held in by a retainer like this. Do I have to replace the retainer also? How does it come out?

I had to look at my parts book to even see that there was a retainer - I could not see how the thermostat was held in, with the poor light in the garage tonight.

Thanks,
Tim

There should be a gap in the retainer. Just start prying on it near one of the ends to get it out of the groove. As long as there is not a lot of damage to it the retainer should be reusable.

Owen is correct, just pry it out of the ring in the neck and remove the thermostat.

Make sure you clean out the groove that the ring snaps/seats into since it get full of rust and crud which makes it hard to get the retainer ring to properly fully seat back into the groove.

If it is damaged, the same ring is used on most of the smaller offset Farmalls (C123 engines), just google "Farmall Thermostat Snap Ring" to find a new replacement snap ring.

Hope this helps

Thank you both. Radiator got dropped off at the shop this morning, so hopefully will have it back and put together by next weekend.

Time to start skidding firewood!
