Farmall H carb leaking

Ok, so I finally got my H running over the weekend. After having it sit for 6+ months while doing minor work, replacing most of the ignition system, etc. It's running, mostly.

The problem I'm having, that it seems like a lot of others have (or have had), is that the carb leaks out of the weep hole. The carb was fully rebuilt and the float is good. I initially adjusted the float as recommended, but it kept leaking. I adjusted it higher and the leak largely stopped.

That being said, I know that these tractors dont need to be choked, and when the choke is applied (as a test when I was trying to get it running), a lot of fuel comes out. If the choke is wide open and the air filter disconnected, I get no fuel leak. The moment I put the air filter tube on the carb and start it up, it starts leaking again, almost like it was being choked.

Maybe the issue is the air filter? I cleaned the whole unit and replaced the oil in the cup with SAE30. Any suggestions? I was going to try raising the float even higher to see if maybe that is the issue.

These old carbs are really darn touchy *sigh*.

thanks in advance!

I don't see what the air filter pipe would have to do with anything other than allowing the gas to dump out the pipe hole instead of pileing up in there and draining slowly out the little hole at bottom of carb. You mention adjusting the float upward. The actually floats need to be adjusted downward to lower fuel level in carb. Are you sure you are adjusting the right way. A float and needle valve can stick open and cause gas to over fill and is a common problem. Are you sure that isn't whats happening?

If you have one of those plastic tip needles you might want to try putting the old one back in and see if that helps. I know some like those new needles but I have nothing but trouble with them. Make sure the float is installed properly. In the end, you still have the number one fix for a leaking carb....shut off the fuel at the tank.

i wrestled a leaking carb on my h for quite a while. be sure you have clean fuel and sediment bowlhas the screen in it, along with the fitting at the carb. next check the float to be SURE it does not rub or hang up on the sides of the carb bowl. also check the bowl gasket so it is not sticking too far in the carb and catching on the float. be sure the retaining pin is not slipping out when the bowl is re-installed and check to see if the little bracket that holds the pin is straight. if you have the rubber tipped float needle, with the carb off and turned upside down, slide the needle on its seat and give it a very light tap with the end of a screwdriver to make a light depression in the needle tip so it seals better. dont kill it with a 5 lb sledge, just a gentle tap.

If the carb was totally rebuilt, the float height should already have been correct. You shouldn't have messed with it. Especially if it was professionally rebuilt.
