gear reduction starter for farmall 656 gas

Guys, I have installed a 4B Cummins in my Farmall 656 gas tractor. I had the original starter rebuilt and it would not even turn it over with a large, hot battery. I then took my rebuilder a 560 LP starter to him that was larger, and he used the larger armature and such with the 656 gear and put it together. It will now crank it but not very fast. It will start, but with winter coming, I don't think it will work when it gets cold. What are my options here? I really don't want to split it to change the ring gear and come up with a 656 diesel starter. Is there a gear reduction setup out there? Thanks for all your replies!

The gasoline, LP, and diesel starters all use the same size ID starter drive. The gasoline engines first came with a 9 tooth starter drive with a gear OD of 29 mm. Later ones along with Hydros and LP engines used a 10 tooth drive with a gear OD of 32 mm. Diesels used a 12 tooth drive with a gear OD of 36.3 mm.

Use drive number 1970544 with the diesel starter. It has the same size drive gear as the larger of the two options for the gas starter but uses a spragg clutch rather than a roller clutch.

Owen, is the drive number 1970544 the one I have that came on my 656 gas? I found a pic of the ring gear on my flywheel. The number is 396421R1. Anyone have a 656 diesel starter for sale?

The gas starter should have either 1939109 or 1851427 as a drive assembly The first is a 9 tooth drive and the second is a 10 tooth drive. 1851427 is basically the same drive as 1970544 with the difference being the first one has a roller clutch and the later one a spragg clutch. Either will work but the spragg clutch will take more torque than the roller clutch before failure. As long as you are not completely sure the diesel starter will work for you, you could just use the drive you have. If the starter will do the job for you just replace with the heavier drive if and when you have a failure.

As long as you are looking for a starter look for one for a diesel Hydrostatic drive one. Delco number 1113201. It will be the heavier starter for the diesel but have the smaller OD drive gear (1970544) already on it.

A little off topic, but I wouldn't recommend using that tractor like it is 100hp drawbar machine to do tillage. The rear end in it is not that stout. The one we had we had trouble keeping the rear end together behind the original gasser. It was however our main tillage tractor at the time.
