cub clutch problems also

was just getting ready to post this when I saw someone else was having problems too. My problem is when I press the clutch pedal halfway the clutch disengages but when I press it all the way the gears grind like its not disengaging. This is a fence row tractor that was locked up and I just got it running. Any ideas?

Sounds like it is way out of adjustment so when you push it pass a point you are pushing the pressure plate fingers so far in that they hit the clutch disk and cause problems

Free travel is not enough since what is happening is you push the pedal down and it goes down so far that it pushes the pressure plate fingers way past where they should be

The clutch in my Cub did the same thing.
What I found was the fingers on the pressure plate were out of adjustment. The tips of the fingers were too close to the pressure plate.
When I pushed the clutch pedal in part way the clutch would release.
When I pushed the clutch pedal all the way in it would grind.
The yoke that holds the throwout bearing was pushed too far forward and hitting the adjustment screws on the pressure plate fingers.
I had to adjust the pressure plate fingers out away from the pressure plate.
If that's what you have going on you'll need a 1/4" drive ratchet with a flat screwdriver bit in a 1/4" socket. And an end wrench for the locknuts.
I took a piece of wire and bent an L on one end that was 1-1/4" long. That way I could stick the wire up in there and use it for a gauge to measure clutch finger height.
It wasn't much fun laying on my back and working thru that little hole in the bellhousing.

Without seeing it diagnosing is only a guess, but most likely you have 2 problems. Probably the throwout bearing, which is a graphite block, is worn to the point the clutch pedal has been adjusted to get enough travel, and now when you push the pedal all the way the throwout bearing housing is hitting the pressure plate fingers.
