Farmall h lower bolster angle

I have a 1940 farmall h and the lower bolster needs to be replaced due to damaged spindles . I bought a good used one , but when I compared them to each other the old one is straight up and down and the new one is at a decent angle. The casting number are the same . What was the purpose for this or is this for a special application ? Thanks Dan

The angle in the casting produces a small amount of caster. Caster being what causes the front shopping cart wheels to follow the path of the front of the cart. This allows a little bit of self straightening, and less wobble. The angle is to the rear, (shorter wheel base) not forward. There was/is an angle plate that produces the same effect on the older pedestals. Jim

Like Jim says, caster is provided to make the steering self-centering - i.e. for the steering wheel to tend to return to straight ahead. The downside is it requires more effort to steer on hard ground.

There is also an aftermarket wedge that can be sandwiched between the pivot shaft and the lower bolster. Correctly installed (thick edge to the rear) it reduces bolster caster angle to somewhat lighten steering effort - sort of a "poor man's power steering".

They changed them to angle to the rear for easier steering i forget the yr that was done it does make easier steering.

Ok, so which is it? Easier or harder?

Both guys before gene said it made them harder to steer, but gene says easier...

To me, it seems like it would be HARDER to steer due to the wheels always trying to pull themselves back toward center, but I've been wrong on many occasions.

At low speeds, and using wheel brakes, it turns easier. In 5th, at speed, it self centers a little, which makes it a tad harder, but if on a crowned road, it well tend to pull to the side. Jim

More caster = harder steering hence the wedge to remove caster with mounted things like corn pickers.

Correct more caster does equal harder steering to make the turn from straight, but it will take slightly less effort to return to the straight ahead position as there is more of a natural tendency in the geometry to self center.

Less caster will equal easier to make the turn, but also the same equeal effort to return the wheels to the straight ahead if you have say zero caster.

More caster less tendency to wobble at speed. Less caster more prone to high speed wobble. So there are additional trade-offs that are always a consideration.
