560 diesel problems plowing

Finally got to do some plowing with a new to me 560 diesel this weekend a and everything started out pretty well. We were plowing up some gov ground and it was pulling pretty hard. Was pulling 3-16 semi mount plow. After about an hour of plowing and using the TA a few time, I noticed that when the TA was in high every once in awhile it would seem to slip. And then after awhile when switching from low to high. It would take about 10 sec before the TA would grab and the tractor would take off.

What does this sound like the problem would be. I haven't had a chance to check adj yet but just with a quick glance everything seems ok. Would this just be the TA clutch or the whole TA going bad. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

If this problem is the TA slipping. Would it tear anything else up to keep plowing with it like it is. We are suppose to plow again this weekend

It sounds like the TA clutch is slipping. You need to check the adjustment on the linkage. Review this in the OM to make sure it is fully releasing. This is rather tricky. So do it by the book.

As for plowing more with it slipping, this isn't good. If it were mine and I didn't want to split it, I would adjust it first. Then try it. If it is still slipping stop. If it is just slipping when you let the TA back to high, don't use the TA. Plow like you ain't got one. If it lugs down, drop a gear.

Check the adjustment first. if it is out of adjustment it could be holding the TA clutch partially disengaged. If it still slips in high after the linkage is correctly adjusted, then the TA clutch is bad.

Adjust it as noted below/above. If it still slips when the TA is forward (direct drive) the TA clutch is worn (from being used, or from beling used incorrectly) the TA lever has two positions Forward, and rearward. The lever is moved as rapidly as possible from one to the other. Never slowly.
If slipping in direct, using it in low, TA rearward, if adjusted correctly, is least likely to destroy things.
If it is slipping (as in not moving with the lever rearward) and not with it forward, using it in direct is best. Jim

You shouldn't have to, but try using the main engine clutch when shifting back to high. It will give the ta clutch a chance to lock up without slipping it. Or use a lower gear. It may get you by for a while. Check the adjusting 1st.

When it slips does the tractor stop completely? If it continues to pull as if it's in low/TA, then it's just the TA clutch. That can be replaced with a simple single split at the bell housing.

I've assisted on a couple of those and in the grand scheme it really isn't that bad. Never done a whole TA before, but some day I want to.

The TA clutch runs dry too, so if he took the cover off & when it slips, he could stop & feel if it is hot or cold. If cold, it would have to be the main clutch.
