Found a 806 diesel with fast hitch, good rear tires, 5000 or so hrs, tach and hr, meter work. He wants 5000 or best offer, don't know much about these. Could you guys tell me what to look for? Is that a fair price? Any info, helps thanks

Fair price if all is good.If Ta is bad, lots of leaks, other problems, the price is goes down from there. On the other hand,if the tractor is EXCELLENT in every way, cheap. So 5000 is average.806 is one of the best IH tractors of all time.

The 806 diesel is a good tractor, It's very possible that it has the original bearing in the engine. It's a 7 main Brg engine, but still I would try and find out if they been changed, or do a oil sample. It's about a 40 yr old tractor, that's a lot of time for the acid in the oil to do some damage!

mark, IMHO , An 806 falls into the same category as a 4020...95 to 105 horses depending on how it is built.
Even at a purchase price of $4000 to $5000 depending on what is wrong or need some to a lot of attention You have a Rebuilder, a Fair to a Really Good tractor. As a Rebuilder sink $15000 to $20000 in a inside out, top to bottom, front to back, + a nice paint job and have a tractor that will last the rest of you Life! and you cant touch a New 100 hp tractor for that Money!!!
As a fair to good tractor you may need to spend a little money to correct some wrongs that really need to be corrected or it may Not Need anything at all!
Get it! if it isn't sending up warning signals when you walk up on it! I would get it and try it, betting on it not needing too much right off from the bat! If it needs tires Obviously that may be a point of contention to barter off from!!
Hope this Helps!

We've got the gas version. It's been our "big" tractor for years and still going. That German diesel is legendary.

The shift linkage (assuming it hasn't been changed to a 56 series style) benefits from adjustment. Sometimes the link needs replaced. The parking brake will sometimes need attention as well. Check the TA of course. On 806s they tended to get used a lot. $5000 is pretty good if it's in working order.

You are correct, the German made engine is a good engine. However it was only used in the 826 in that line of tractors. The 806 used a D361 and the 856 used a D407, both US built engines.

does it have the RD pump? If so there are no longer any parts available for it. The pumps were discontinued before the tractors were. I have one that needs resealed.
