On my 784 can I time the diesel injection pump by setting it on the timeing mark. Then set the pump with the key way up? I figure this will be on or half off. Any ideas??? thanks all

Hi Bender, hope you didn't loosen the cap screws on the pump gear. If you marked the mounting bracket and the pump then the pump will either be almost in time or 1/2 a revolution out of time as the pump only turns at have the speed of the engine. There is a procedure in the shop srvice manual to do static timing of the pump.

The problem with the pump was the 3 little cap screws backed off and sheared . I got a new pump and now trying to put it together without pulling the front cover to find all the little timing marks. Any ideas? thanks Noel

Hi Bender, do you mean the cap screws on the injection pump drive gear that connects to the hub on the injection pump? Do you think that the injection pump drive gear jumped out of time with the timing gear? If it didn't then you have a 1 in 6 chance of getting the timing somewhat close.
I can email you the static adjustment from my I&T shop manual for 684 which has same timing as 784.

You can do the try & try again method. A few years ago my brother changed the front lip seal on his 454 and then he complained it was hard to start and wasn't running correctly. I had been away for a while and when I went to visit him and he started it up I could tell it was not timed correctly. I asked him how he took the injection pump off and he had taken the cap screws out before he realized all he had to do was remove the nut on the drive shaft. I retimed the injection pump by setting the cap screws in the middle of the slot and by trying to start the engine. If it is timed to fast it will kick back on the starter and if timed to slow the starter will have to crank the engine several times before it will start. When the engine is warm and timed correctly the engine will start within one revolution.

If you want the static timing, my email is clarabrownlee$rogers.com but replace the $ with @.

I got her together, in time and it runs. Only problem it wont rev up just idle. It was a used pump so it goes back and I start over. Thanks for the help.
