M&W or Home made?

My SM has this sucker on it:

I know M&W made something like this but I'm not sure this is the real deal as it has some home made characteristics.

None the less it doesn't work with my Saginaw 3 point hitch. I could make up a new bottom plate and cut the tube of and reweld it. If it's legit M&W I probably wouldn't do that though.

Any idea?

Looks like a factory seat, probably made by Monroe. It replaced an identical Monroe seat except the early seat had the shock in back. Never heard of M&W seats. Also never seen or heard about interfering with a Saginaw 3 point.

Hah, sorry...

The lever in my hand, it's for engaging the PTO.

I don't think it's M&W after doing a little googling. I think it's either another aftermarket setup or like I said, farmer made.

I should have been more clear.

On a second look, what is the thing you have your hand on? That is what interferes with the 3 point?

Yup, that's what I'm talking about.

Look to the left, where the pto rod would connect. See how the 3 point hitch is in the way. The whole thing would have to move forward for it to work.

The rod part looks like M&W, but the base looks remodeled. It should have a U-shaped piece that wraps around the stock M PTO engagement rod with a bolt thru the end of the M&W shaft and clamps tight on the H vertical rod just below the finger loop. My Schwartz 3-pt has a smidge more room between the rock shaft and the tractor platform than yours to allow the stock PTO lever to remain in place.

So the original rod stays intact then? The way this one was setup was pretty cobbled up. I would love to see a picture of yours if that was possible? Also, is the knob on yours threaded on? Mine has a 1/4 peice of threaded rod welded on the end (kind of ugly) and the knob threads onto that.

The knob on mine is a Bakelite plastic or perhaps a hard rubber. I think it was pressed on rather than threaded. I have a late M of my dad's that has the other style lever (on the left of the seat) I was never sure that it was M&W, but it must be a newer style. I watched the style like yours, only a complete one, sell on ebay a while back for $145.00
 
Huh, that's very, very similar to mine.

The angle of that setup is kind of wonky, mine when hooked up was much higher and out of the way.

Interesting. Now I wonder if it would be sacrilegious to modify mine to work with the 3pt installed or just not use it and keep it original.

I think you just answered my question.

I have the clamp that goes with it, it's just he rod is all fouled up but it looks like it uses the OE rod.

I guess I wont be cutting it. :) If I leave the lever down like in the picture you posted it would work but I think I would be tripping all over it.

Agreed. Mine is clamped lower on the original pull rod. My knob points at the headlight bar when the PTO is engaged and is near the seat rim with the PTO in the off position. You can adjust the height of the handle infinitely provided you have enough clearance at the 3pt tube.
 
We had one of those on the M for many years, except someone had reworked it by cutting the lever and welding it to itself at a much shorter length. It was vertical when the PTO was disengaged, and maybe a 20 degree angle forward when the PTO was engaged.

It seized up so we took it off.

The bracket part that attaches to the tractor is flame cut on each end and haphazardly cut at that. Not attempt to clean up the cut at all. Makes me think who ever made these made them out of scraps they had laying around. If I did want to change it I doubt anyone would ever notice. The other interesting thing is it looks like the tube is galvanized.

I've just picked up a new OE rod and braket, I'm going to install those and then take another look at this thing later on. I would like to put it back on as it was one the tractor when I got it and I do like how it works, it's just going to take some fiddling with to make work with the Saginaw.

This tractor also has an M&W throttle and has been upgraded to live hydraulics. Pretty tricked out tractor back in the day, I do have a Char-Lynn PS setup to go on it as well, I just haven't gotten that far yet.

Soon after WW II was over, several mfr'g shops made up
various ""gadget-like" levers to ease tractor operators effort
needed to operate the PTO and belt pulley pull/push rods on
Farmall tractors. Most used rubber knobs like IH used on the
shift lever. The things were sold by most IH dealers. We had
both on our '41 and '50 model H's. They did work good and
were a help . There were no after market 3 point adaptions
devices like Saginaw hitches around yet.
