Little Genuis Value

Looking at a little genuis plow that i would like to have. Been a yard ornament for 40 years but looks complete with coulters. Wheels are rusty where they sat on the ground, points don't look worn but are very rusty also. He was asking 375, i offered 150 which is more than i would like to pay but it is complete. He countered $275 because he thinks that is what it would bring at a consignment sale. I may go back with 200 but doubt he will take it. Who is closer to what it is worth.

I may be a little biased and stuck in the past because i've owned 3-4 of them i paid 40-50 for 10 years ago out of fence rows and junk piles.

It is a 2 bottom rope trip.

All righty... just tried to edit to add location, and looks like my photos disappeared.

Will make a new reply.

fm,

Husband and I recently watched two Little Genius plows sell at a large auction with a big crowd (in southern MN).

However, we did find when buying our two bottom Genius recently, that private sellers were all asking significantly higher prices (in the $350-$450 range. We had placed an ad and had 5 responses and ALL were in that range.)

This two bottom Little Genius brought $100. It was missing the wheel scraper on the tail wheel, the handle for lifting the hitch was really bent, something was wrong with the small spring, levers were bent and had been welded, etc.

On the other hand, this one bottom brought $275. It was missing the scraper on the tail wheel... they may have been other issues too, but I don't remember for sure.

There are a lot of variables. Location and condition certainly, but also on steel or rubber, clutch lift or hydraulic, what kind of bottoms are on it (cast, Plow Chief or Super Chief), how many bottoms etc.

I have seen real nice 2 & 3 bottoms go for $250-400, but I also bought a rough looking 2 bottom, hydraulic lift with rotten tires and Plow Chief Bottoms for $5 at a sale a few years ago.

Keep in mind that if it has been sitting as yard art for 40 years it may take quite a bit of work to get it back into good enough shape to use for plowing.

That's a pretty high price for one that's rusted up. I payed $250 for a VERY nice 3x14 with slat bottoms that nice and shiny. I also paid $175 for a really nice 3x14 with hydraulic lift. Both these has tires that held air, but were pretty much shot.

I will also add, I just bought a 2x16 with junk tires, missing one coulter and points/shares that have been welded up and look terrible. Its going to be a lawn ornament for us. Paid $50

I have a 2-14 Little Genius on steel. It is ready to hook on to a tractor and go plow. I do not want to sell it, but if someone offered me $450, I think it would have a new owner.

fm,

A rope trip, 2 bottom Little Genius is a great plow, but I think the seller is too high, and you would be better off leaving it sit where it is.

If the wheels (or rims if on rubber) are seriously rusted from settling in the ground then you will need to find/buy them also. Rusted moldboards can be shined up, if moldboards have any breaks/cracks then you have more costly problems.

If he thinks it will bring $275 at a consignment sale he should try that! You can do better.

If we hear of a plow in better shape, where do you live? Cost of driving long distance is a killer nowadays.

It is on steel wheels. They are pretty rusty but completely usable. I think the wear parts are in ok shape wear wise--just really rusty/pitted and will take some elbow grease and time to get shined up. I think i am going to ask him to let me know what sale it is going to--then go buy it for less than i offered him!

I am in ohio.

And that is less than half scrap price. 2 bottom sell for more than 3 bottoms. If complete and wear parts are good then $275 is reasonable around here. And clutch lift worth a lot more than hydrolick lift. 2-14" steel clutch lift working condition will bring that money in Amish area for use with horses.

If the outer edges of the moldboards are sharp, they are very worn and it is likely that the rest of the wear parts are also.
