IH 454, clutch linkage slipping...

Problem with the 454 clutch! A couple years back, when I pushed in the clutch pedal there was no pressure, just straight to the floor. When I investigated, I found there is an approximately 3-4 inch plate that connects the clutch adjuster to the shaft that goes into the engine block. This metal plate was slipping on the shaft. So, as I was in the middle of hay season, I just removed the grease zert and welded the plate to the shaft. Well, that weld has finally broke! Today I took a puller and removed the plate, expecting to see either a broken split key or a spline that was worn on the plate..... Nope! All I see is a smooth shaft to go along with the inside of the plate equally smooth!? How were these connected originally, pressed? My idea was to just drill it and put in a spilt key, but there is no room to do anything while it is on the tractor. So, is it possible to get this shaft out of the tractor without splitting the tractor? Of am in for a real chore..... at least the hay is all in.... Thanks for any ideas.... if photos are needed, I could put some up in a day or two.

On your 454 item #5 is turning in the clutch
shaft item #8? According to parts there are two
pins: 617938R1 PIN, 5/16" x 1 3/8" that secure
item #5 to clutch shaft.

You maybe able to get the clutch shaft and item
#5 out without splitting the 454, never tried.
