560 Starter problem

Have a 560 diesel, starter number is 1113053, the nose piece is stamped 1933834, has a 10 tooth starter drive on it and it will not engage the flywheel, the ring gear appears to be OK, a little wear but not bad, tried the 9 tooth starter drive and it doesn"t reach the ring gear, any suggestions the 10 tooth does sound like it is trying to engage is there an adjustment on the solenoid this is driving me crazy

Your starter should have the 10 tooth drive, Delco number 1933838. Drive number 1948877 can be used for a heavy duty sprague type drive instead of the roller clutch type.

The pinion depth can be adjusted by either the solenoid link or moving the solenoid itself. Here is the service manual for your starter.
