regulator question

The regulator on my 300U is acting up. Its a 12v, negative ground system with a generator. When I start the tractor the amps go up to a normal reading but sometimes the reading will stay up and if left alone over charges the battery. I can reach down and tap the side of the regulator and it goes back to normal charge. Is this the contacts in there sticking and can they be cleaned and fix the problem or is the problem something else. I've seen this before and eventually it leads to a new regulator.

Cleaning the points on the regulating unit,(points that are closed when not running) may take care of problem. I would use a fine sand paper and then brake cleaner or alcohol.

If your regulator has 2 sets of contacts, the normally close, NC, is the contact that needs cleaned. I don't have a file, I use emery cloth or 400 wet/dry, then clean with paper. Never use regular sand paper, it will leave sand behind. Good chance the contacts are pitted and ugly.

New regulators are under $40 at our local Rural King.

Got to thinking, it possible your problem may not be dirty contacts, instead the spring tension is too much. I've bent the tabs holding the spring to provide less tension. Also, is you put a piece of paper between contacts, it would keep the contacts from grounding the fields, then you would use just the wire wound resistor, limiting the current, preventing overcharging. Use a voltmeter if you plan to bend tabs. The last 12v regulator I installed the voltage went to 17 volts and the NC contacts still didn't open.

Well, now you can use fine sand paper, emery cloth or a file. Can't get more confusing than that can it. A riffle file is what you are supposed to use according to the good book but not too many even know what that is let alone have one. Any fine paper or cloth will work. You just have to get it clean again after you polish them as that is what causes them to burn , not the grit embeded in the points. The spring adjusts the voltage setting so if it works ok after you rap it I would guess it is close to correct but only a volt meter will tell you for sure.

yep, check out the field points. clean them.. check linkages to make sur ethey are not sticking or rubbing on something to hang. probably don't need to hone them unless the contacts themselves have burs that are sticking..e tc.
