Farmall H Generator Oil Cups....

I have a 6v Delco generator that I'm cleaning up to put on my latest H. The front oil cup is missing it's cap & I'd like to replace the whole cup. Are there different sizes? Do they just pop out or unscrew? I cleaned out the remnants of something fiberous. Is there supposed to be packing of some kind in the hole?

Thanks guys,
Mike

They just pop in - Use a block of wood to tap the new one in. I have seen them with some felt inside to help hold oil, but not always.

Mike - If the generator has been rebuilt and a new, sealed bearing used to replace the original open bearing the front oil cup becomes extraneous. Ie. the cup may have been intentionally removed since the sealed bearing cannot be re-oiled. (Any oil put in the front cup simply ends up splashed around the inside front end of the generator.)

I have a couple generators rebuilt with sealed front bearings. To remind me NOT to oil the front cups I've pulled them out and replaced with a small hardwood plugs.

The oil cups are a press fit. Take a pair of vice grips and squeeze the cup down to deform it, and work it back and forth to remove. I have not found a way to remove them without destroying them. good news is the cups are still readily available. They also should have a little felt wick in them. For the cups I have bought, the wick is supplied with them, but you have to install it.

All you need to do is determine size. Usually 1/4", but they also come in 3/16" as well. Both are available.

The cups can be removed with little damage by finding a punch or metal pin that just fits into the upper part of the hole. Use a needle nose Vise-Grip to grab the cup and with a gentle twist you should be able to pull it right out.

That's a great way to do it no doubt. I have decided to buy a complete rebuild kit from classic generator.com and I think the kit comes with new oil cups and wicks, but I may use the originals if I can remove them successfully with your method. I like all original as much as I can, even down to the little stuff like that.
