I was having a lttle grinding/grating sound when applying the left brake on my 51 M. So I pulled the cover and removed the band (which seemed to look good). I cleaned the shaft, removed the pins and put never seize on. Re-installed and there is no difference. Also jacked up the rear and the left tire seems to want to stick,(turns but not without some effort) the right spins pretty easy. Pedals are adjusted evenly... Could it need a new band?

When driving the tractor, the grinding will go away after several minutes of using the brake. Both brakes work well.

Thanks

Are your rim to wheel bolts all tight? I've had that happen before. It can make a horrible grinding sound. Or as Dewy said, bearings.

I would guess a wheel bearing, (Inner) when they go they take the case with them as well as the bull gear some times. a pinion bearing is also suspect. Look for metal particles in the final drive housing oil. Jim

I think it's something other than a brake band, are u sure your not low on grease ? Either way you got to find the problem before, something worse happens! Please let us know what u find out!!

If it was a bearing wouldn't it do it all the time? As I said, it goes away after a short period of time, almost like something is sticking...

Maybe grinding isn't the best way to explain the sound, it's kinda like a screeching when applying your brakes...

If it just started screeching now that would be unusual. I remember as a kid when my dad bought the 45 H new, hearing those brakes screech when he turned around at the ends of the fields. Some times they do , sometimes they don"t. I would do a little work on the lining with some sandpaper to break the glaze and see if that helps. Also, check the adjustment of the set screw in the bottom of the brake housing. With the wheel jacked up, play with it . Normally it is set to a 1/4 to 1/2 turn backed out from making brake drag.

Played with it while jacked up and with cover off, when the brake shaft is not hooked to the pedal adjustment it rotates freely and stops without sticking. When I hook the shaft to the pedal it acts like it can't release quite enough, the shaft is trying to move upwards. Adjusting the pedal all the way out helps some, but then I have no resistance left in the pedal. Screw under pan has been adjusted.

Could brake shaft or pedal adjustment rod be bent and causing this..?
