1086 Hydraulic Pressure

I have a 1086 with a TA that works fine if you take off in low but if you pull the handle back once your moving it doesn't want to engage. You can pull the engine down once it is engaged and it doesn't seem to slip. I am wondering if there are any other ports to check or other things to look at that could be causing this problem? If you leave it in low and push the throttle up half way or so it will engage and jerk forward. It seems like a lack of oil. But I don't want to change the MCS pump if there is something else. It has been under a year since I changed the Hydraulic filter. Could check again. Anybody have any ideas? It is any earlier 1086. Thanks!

Any time that style TA does not engage on the low side it is always a mechanical problem with the TA and not hydraulic. The low side id driven by a mechanical clutch with hydraulic assist to prevent freewheeling.

When you say low side do you mean with the
handle pulled back? I just assumed that meant
low side. When the TA handle is forward it
seems to work fine. I am going to change
filters again.

Owen is correct. The lever back position is held with a one way (sprague) clutch. if it slips at all, in low, it is that issue. Driving it as is in direct (handle forward) is probably OK till you get it fixed. Pulling the handle back with the One way clutch slipping is very expensive, ir ruins the anti free wheeling disk clutch in a hurry, then much more goes down hill, like the front drive multi plate clutch. Thanks for the info. Do you have to split it to fix the sprague clutch? Just wondering what it will take. Thanks again!

The guys have it correct, the sprag is slipping. The fix is to replace the TA assembly. Here are a couple pictures of a TA handler that I have designed to replace the TA assembly. These pictures are from a 986 that I replace the TA unit a few years ago.

Yes a double split. Engine from clutch, and TA module section from Trans. Big weight and splitting stands. Jim

Now that is just the Cat's Meow !

I don't believe I've ever seen someone pull the TA without disconnecting the AC lines.

As long as the quick disconnect works simple close the suction side valve, run the AC a minute or so to evacuate the pump, remove the suction valve from the compressor with the hose attached. Position the hose with valve back with the cab and disconnect the high pressure line at eh cab.

This is great advice everyone. The pics are awesome too. I just think the TA acts weird because it holds strong when it actually engages and it does, it just takes a second. Acts like the cable isn't adjusted correctly. Does this seem possible? Maybe I'm just looking for an easy way out.

I adjusted the TA linkage and it works fine again. I forgot the 90 degree piece of the linkage that attaches to the turnbuckle snapped off and I welded back together. I must not of welded in quite the same spot. Thanks for the good information just in case this doesn't work!
